Flower Motif Crochet top (Japanese Crochet Pattern)

Happy mid-week, everyone! I hope you are all doing well.

I am ecstatic to finally share my latest creation: a vibrant, granny-square-style crochet summer top. After joining 38 individual flower motifs, it is officially complete!

When I ran out of my main cream cotton yarn, I decided to get creative. I made the floral motifs in various contrasting colors, and honestly, the accidental scrap-yarn look makes it the perfect boho statement piece for summer.

Making this handmade top taught me a huge lesson about the importance of crochet math and calculating garment width.

The original pattern guidelines were:

As I started blocking my first few squares, I realized 60 cm across (one side) would be way too oversized for my frame. Instead of blindly following the pattern, I pivoted. I adjusted my hook size and tension to make each piece 10 cm x 10 cm.

The result? A total width of 50 cm that fits me absolutely perfectly!

Standard crochet patterns are a guide, not a rulebook. Everyone’s body shape and size is unique. By measuring yourself and tweaking the size of your individual motifs, you can customize any garment to fit you like a glove.
