Mastering Mosaic Knitting: My Journey with "Paperdawn" by Melanie Berg
There is nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a complex knit, especially when it involves a new-to-you technique. I recently completed the Paperdawn shawl by Melanie Berg, and let me tell you—this project was a lesson in both skill and resilience!
The Challenge of Mosaic Color Matching
This was my very first time attempting Mosaic Knitting, a fascinating technique that uses slipped stitches to create intricate geometric patterns. While the knitting itself is rewarding, choosing the right three-color combination was my biggest challenge.
-
The "Blind Spot": I’ll be honest—color matching can be a blind spot for me. My first attempt didn't have the contrast I wanted, and the mosaic pattern was getting "lost" in the shades.
-
The "Frog" Moment: I had to find the courage to rip out my work (frogging) and start over.
-
The Lesson: In needlework, resilience is just as important as tension. It’s always better to re-do a project than to live with a finished piece you don't love!
The Second Attempt: A Success Story
For my second try, I went with a deeper blue shade as the anchor, and what a difference it made! The mosaic pattern is so much clearer now, and the colors finally "sing." I am absolutely in love with the result—the drape and texture are incredible. This has officially become my go-to shawl for any occasion.
