Woolly Stitch

Handmade crochet granny square summer top made from repurposed premium yarn scraps, folk art style wearable.

Viola! My latest summer crochet top is officially off the hook. This project was a true labor of love and a creative challenge: I engineered this entire beauty using only leftover cotton yarn scraps from my stash.

I am absolutely obsessed with how the colors came together. When I finished, my husband took one look and said it looked like "folk art." Honestly? I’ll take that as a massive compliment! There is something so special about the "perfectly imperfect" look of a scrappy, handmade garment.

The Engineering: How I Built It

If you love turning yarn scraps into wearable magic, here is a breakdown of how I constructed this piece. It’s a great project for those looking to move beyond simple scarves:

  • The Foundation: I started by joining 6 large granny squares together to create a sturdy, decorative base.

  • The Body: From the squares, I picked up stitches and crocheted in the round all the way up to the armholes. This creates a seamless, comfortable fit.

  • The Shaping: I split the work at the armholes to create the front and back panels separately.

  • The Finish: I opted for a classic V-neck at the front to give it a flattering, airy silhouette perfect for the summer heat.

Why Sustainable Crochet Matters

"Stash-busting" isn't just about cleaning out your craft room—it's about sustainable fashion. Using every last bit of high-quality cotton yarn ensures nothing goes to waste and results in a one-of-a-kind piece that nobody else in the world owns.
